John Marshall 1911

John Marshall 1911

About John Marshall Aberdeen

Born in Methlick Aberdeenshire on the 15th January 1844. He started making around 1870 and made around 150, beside repairing. Most of his making was on the Stradivari model and on occasions he made others. Early violins were covered with a spirit varnish, then latterly he used oil.

About the Violin
This violin is labelled John Marshall 1911 and stamped internally on the top block. The violin is modelled on famous violin maker Alexandro Gagliano of Naples Italy. The violin back is two piece with matching ribs and scroll, front being made of spruce and tight grain structure. The varnish is of a dark red-brown oil varnish that sets off the maple well.

The Sound
This is the best sounding John Marshall violin that I’ve played and heard to date.

This violin is silky smooth to play with a dark side giving the player an expressive range on all the strings. This violin would be well placed in any playing environment.

Condition
This violin is very clean and  is in fantastic condition for being 112 years old. There are no cracks to be seen or repaired.
